•Tourism is a key sector for the EU economy
•671 million International tourists visited Europe in 2017 – accounting for 50% of the share of worldwide tourism.
•The sector employed over 13m people in 2017
–Almost 8m in food and beverages
–2m in transport
–3.6m in accommodation, travel agencies, tour operators and air transport.


  What is Sustainable Tourism

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) defines Sustainable Tourism as

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, industry, environment and host communities”  (UNWTO)

•Essentially Sustainable Tourism is
–Identifying local resources, building on these in a sustainable way, ensuring surrounding environment, heritage and culture, local people and jobs are protected and not negatively impacted.
